Club History
The club was founded by Sensei Bob Marshall and his brother Alan. Its first training session was held on Wednesday 7th October 1992 at The Spitfire Centre, Church Road, Biggin Hill, Kent. The club trained in the annex on a mat supplied by the Spitfire Centre and remained there for four years.
In October 1996 Sensei Alan Marshall left to concentrate on his own club in Mottingham and on the 23rd October 1996
Sensei’s Bob Marshall and Ian Ferris decided to purchase their own mat and moved the club to The Squash Club, Grub Grounds Farm, Jail Lane, Biggin Hill, Kent. During their time at the Squash club they were joined by Carol Hayward and Debbie Pratt as the clubs other black belt instructors.
On the 19th November 2003, with the continued popularity of the club making it too big for the squash courts, the club bought its second 24ft x 18ft mat and relocated to its current location in the gymnasium at the Darwin Sports Centre, Jail Lane, Biggin Hill.
In March 2006, the club was awarded a lottery grant to further improve the facilities, including state-of-the-art mats, enhanced training equipment,
projector and funding to take judo into the community. With 140 Square metres of mat space this makes the club one of the largest in the South East.
The club trains every Wednesday evening excluding Christmas and most Saturday Afternoons. (Please check the events tab). Currently we have 5, fully insured, black belt instructors and senior grade assistant instructors.
All instructors have been enhanced CRB checked. We have a dedicated child protection officer and trained first aiders.
We have jackets that can be borrowed initially, so there are no start up expenses.
Judo
Judo - A sport, a martial art, a discipline, a recreational activity, a fitness programme, a form of self defense, a way of life? It is all of these and more. Why not come and see which one is for you.
Judo first appeared in the chronicles of the 1st century Chinese Emperor , Juang Wu.
In 1882, Dr Jigaro Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied and refined the ancient martial art of Ju Jitsu and integrated the best techniques into what is now the modern Sport of Judo.
(A Martial Sport perhaps!)
Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practised by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self defence and for many other reasons.
But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it!
Please take time to read the Biggin Hill Judo Club constitution, and a more detailed article, adapted from Judoinfo.com, on why everyone should Do Judo. Just click on the links below:
